The Fifth Season: Paying Attention to What Needs to Be Released
Something shifted in the air recently.
I didn't decide to deep clean. I just started. I began wiping things down, dusting corners, washing curtains. The kind of cleaning that requires you to touch every object in a room to feel if it stays.
As I moved through each room and picked something up without asking myself whether it served a purpose, I just knew. It took less than a second. No deliberation. Just… this goes.
The Instantaneous Knowing
This isn't decluttering the way most people do it. You don't stand in your kitchen and philosophize about whether you use the garlic press enough. You don't make a pro-and-con list about that vase your friend gave you.
Real energetic screening happens faster than thought.
You pick something up. Your hand knows before your mind catches up. The object either resonates with you or it doesn't. There's no argument about it.
I decided some objects had served their purpose. Not broken, not ugly, just done. They'd given what they came to give.
So they went on the curb.
Other objects surprised me. Specifically, some of the things my mother had given me. I'd been holding onto them not because I loved them, but because I was supposed to love them. Because she gave them to me, and that meant I should keep them.
That pause, that sense of obligation instead of resonance, was the signal. That's when I knew they needed to go.
Objects Have Seasons
Not everything that goes away is discarded. Some things just move.
My Mary statues had been sitting on our bedroom windowsill for a year or two. When I placed them there, it felt right. They belonged there. The energy aligned.
But something shifted.
When I washed the curtains as part of the deep clean, I picked up those statues and I just knew: not here anymore. So I walked them through our home, feeling for where they wanted to land. I placed them in a different room, and the moment they settled there, it felt right.
The statues didn't change. The space didn't change. But the relationship between them changed. And I was paying attention.
A desk is another example. This one faced a door with my back to a window. I’ve been feeling something wasn’t right for the few weeks I’ve been working from this new spot. I shifted it so that my back faced a solid wall while still giving me the advantage of facing the door. Just a slight repositioning.
When I stepped back, the room felt better. Looked better. The desk now was in its right place.
The South Room Quietly Wakes Up
The room that changed most dramatically is my office. It's located in the south section of our home where the annual Five Star sits in 2026. I've been keeping this room quiet and still all year.
As I deep cleaned, I cleared out a lot of knickknacks. Things that had accumulated over time. I removed what didn't belong. I donated a bunch of plants to a good friend that I know will cherish them.
And then I started meditating in that room.
For months, that sector has been a no-use zone. Quiet. Contained.
But something shifted. Something said: it's time to use this space intentionally now.
That room is connected to my personal chart's spiritual palace. And it feels right to sit there. To let my mind settle there.
The Fifth Season Is Coming
Most cultures recognize four seasons: winter, spring, summer, fall.
But some cultures recognize a fifth season. The harvest season. The time between summer's heat and autumn's cool, when crops ripen and gathering begins.
That's where we are now. Entering early September. The air is different. Something has shifted.
I don't know if our home was asking me to notice this, or if my body just knew. Probably both. But about a week ago, something said: it's time to clear. It's time to release.
My body remembers what farmers know: there's a season for planting and a season for harvest and a season for the land to rest.
Accumulation and Intention
I always do a deep cleaning before Lunar New Year. A reset, a clearing, a fresh start before the new cycle begins.
And maybe, I have also unintentionally found myself each year, during this seasonal change, being called to those forgotten corners, or the stove that hasn’t been deeply cleaned since February, or finding my hands picking something up and instantaneously knowing it’s time to find a new home.
That buildup of energy or belongings within our home was calling for some attention.
I recognized the accumulation had reached a point where our home and my body moving through it needed a release.
How Lightness Feels
After the week of moving through each room, holding each object, deciding what resonates and what doesn't, things shifted.
Our home feels lighter. Not in the sense of emptiness, but in the sense of clarity.
Things that needed to move have moved. Things that needed to leave have left. Objects that still belong are exactly where they need to be.
My back faces a solid wall at my new temporary desk. The Mary statues rest in a new room. My south room is ready. And a lot of the knickknacks and plants are gone.
I can feel it. Not just see it, but feel it as I move through our home.
What Your Home Is Asking For
Most of us move through our days on autopilot. We get stuck in routines. The objects on our shelves stay on our shelves because they've always been there. The furniture faces the direction it faces because we haven't questioned it. We hold onto things because we're supposed to, not because we want to.
And then the fifth season arrives.
It's not a season your calendar recognizes. But your body knows it. The air shifts. Something says: now. This is that moment to stop and look at what's actually surrounding you.
This season is asking you to gather what truly belongs and release what doesn't. To pick things up and feel whether they resonate. To notice what you've been holding out of obligation instead of choice. To reposition the furniture that never felt quite right. To clear the accumulation that's been quietly weighing on you.
It's not about achieving a certain aesthetic or proving you can declutter. It's about recognizing that you have agency in what surrounds you. That you get to decide what stays and what goes.
So pick something up. Feel whether it resonates. Listen to what your body already knows. Notice what's been overlooked. Assess what stays and what needs to find a new home.
And that intuition you've always had? It's waiting for you to follow it.
