We’re Halfway Through the Fire Horse Year. How is Your Home Holding Up?

We're at the peak of the Fire Horse Year.

If you've felt intensity lately, in your home, in your life, in the world around you that's not coincidence. We're in a yang year with intense energy concentrated in specific sectors of every home.

And if you don't know what that means for your space, this could be useful.

What a Fire Horse Year Is

Every year in feng shui carries its own energy arrangement. The Fire Horse Year (February 4, 2026 through February 3, 2027) is a yang year which means it is inherently active.

Within that yearly energy, nine flying stars land in different sectors of your home. These annual stars interact with your home's natal stars (the ones that were established when your home was built). Sometimes they support each other. Sometimes they create conflict.

Right now, we're at the midway point of the Fire Horse Year.

The South: The Five Star Zone

If you didn’t get the memo back in February, here's what you need to know: this year, the Five Star lands in the South.

The Five Star is the most unpredictable, volatile energy in feng shui. The Five Star is associated with the earth element. When it's in your south sector, that area demands your attention, specifically, your restraint.

In an ideal world: The south section becomes a complete no-use zone for the entire year. No work, no activity, no energy. You keep it as quiet and still as possible.

In reality: Most people can't completely avoid their south-sector rooms. Your bedroom might be in the south. Your kitchen. Your living room.

If you can't avoid the south entirely, minimize use as much as possible. Close doors. Keep activity low. Turn off the lights. Create stillness.

Regardless of your situation, there is one absolute rule: No fire element in the south this year.

No candles. No bright lights. Nothing that feeds the volatile energy already present.

If you absolutely cannot avoid using your south sector, then it becomes even more critical that you know your home's natal stars in that area and make proper adjustments to create balance. But ideally? Keep it quiet. Let it rest.

The Center: The One Star Energy

While the south demands restraint, the center of your home is receiving different energy this year.

The One Star sits in the center and is associated with the water element. This star is about flow, movement, connection, new pathways. Depending on your home's natal star configuration in that sector, it can be beneficial. But this is where knowing your natal stars becomes important.

If your center's natal configuration supports amplifying positive energy, then the One Star this year is an opportunity. When I realized the One Star was landing in our center, I made intentional enhancements to amplify that energy because the stars in the center of our home are in a positive relationship with each other. Even though the annual star is water, my natal stars require earth grounding.

My pantry door (in the center) stays open. The light is always on. I added mirrors to distribute the energy outward. I placed glass bowls filled with sand, earth element grounding the space. I created a painting of a gentle ocean meeting the beach and hung it there.

But here's the key: these adjustments made sense for our specific home's natal configuration. What works in our center might not be the right move in yours.

If you don't know your natal stars, this is something to check before making big adjustments to your home. You don't want to amplify energy that conflicts with your home's foundation.

The Complexity Layer: Annual + Natal Stars

Here's where it gets nuanced.

Every sector of your home has its three natal stars (established when your home was built) AND an annual star (this year's energy) AND a monthly star. These all interact.

Sometimes they align beautifully. Sometimes they create friction.

Take our southeast sector. Our natal star combination includes 5-2, already one of the most challenging configurations to balance. This year, the annual 9-star lands in the southeast. Nine is a positive star, which sounds great.

Except it's not that simple, especially during a yang fire horse year. The Nine Star is associated with the fire element and during a fire year, that is way too much fire.

Positive star + challenging natal combination = more complexity. It's not a straightforward good or bad. It requires looking at the natal chart and overlaying the annual chart to understand what's actually happening in that sector and what adjustments might be needed.

Someone else might have a very positive natal configuration in their south, but because the volatile Five Star is there this year, it complicates things. They might need to do something they wouldn't normally do.

Or someone might have a difficult south natal configuration, and the Five Star this year makes it even more important to keep that sector closed and quiet.

The point: you can't just look at the annual chart and make blanket recommendations. You have to overlay it with your home's actual stars to understand what adjustments are required.

What to Do Right Now

We're at the peak of the Fire Horse Year. You still have months of this intense energy ahead.

If your south sector is accessible:

  • Minimize use as much as possible

  • Close doors when not in use

  • Absolutely no fire element (no candles or bright lights)

  • If you can't avoid working there, know your natal stars and make proper adjustments

If your center sector is active:

  • Know your home's natal stars in that sector first

  • If your natal configuration supports it, welcome the One Star's positive water energy

  • If it does, make intentional adjustments that work with it

  • If it doesn't, be cautious about amplifying energy that might conflict with your foundation

Across all nine sectors:

  • If you know your home's natal stars, overlay them with this year's annual stars

  • Look for interactions positive, negative, neutral

  • Adjust accordingly

If you don't know your home's natal stars:
This is the moment to find out. The Fire Horse Year is intense enough on its own. Knowing what's happening in your space means you can work with it instead of feeling like you're just surviving it.

The Bigger Point

Feng shui isn't just about one-time adjustments. It's about understanding the energy present in your home, both what was established when it was built and what's flowing through it right now.

The Fire Horse Year is teaching us that. The intensity you might be feeling? That's real. That's the volatile Five Star in your south coupled with a fire year. The opportunities you might be noticing? That's the positive One Star in your center.

Your job is to work intelligently with both.

Keep your south quiet. Invite the good energy at your center. Understand how this year's stars interact with your home's foundation.

That's how you move through the Fire Horse Year not just surviving it, but actually supported by your space.

Athena

I came to feng shui through healing, which is probably why I've never been able to treat it as a lifestyle aesthetic. After being diagnosed with an auto-immune disease in 2012 I started working with a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner who introduced it as part of my treatment. That experience made it very clear early on that this was something far more critical than making sure my house was tidy.

Eventually my journey led me to Flying Stars, the classical system known as Xuan Kong Fei Xing, and I haven't looked back.

I also spent over two decades in PR and brand strategy in the real estate industry, helping Fortune 500 companies understand how the way they show up shapes how the world receives them. I've spent more than 20 years telling the story of the value of a home. Now I get to tell a different and deeper part of that story.

Every assessment is grounded in your home's natal chart, its facing direction, and what the stars are actually doing in your space right now.
