What Happens During a Feng Shui Home Assessment

You're interested. You want to understand your home's energy. But you're also wondering: what exactly happens? What's included in the report? And why do I keep asking for the year your home was built or renovated?

Let me walk you through the process so you know exactly what to expect.

Before the Assessment: The Year Built (or Renovated) Matters

Before anything else, I need one piece of information: the year your home was built. Or, if your home underwent a major renovation… one where the roof or outer walls were opened, the year of that renovation.

This matters because major structural work resets the energetic foundation. If your home was built in 1980 but had a complete roof replacement and exterior wall work in 2025, that 2025 date is what I use to calculate your home's flying stars.

This isn't optional. It's the starting point.

Your home's flying stars, the energetic map that determines everything else, is calculated using a formula that requires two things: the year the house's current structure was established (whether that's when it was built or when major renovation happened) and the direction it faces. Without that year, I cannot chart the movement of stars through your space. Without that chart, nothing else can be determined.

If you don't know the year, you can find it through: closing documents like your inspection report or home appraisal, county property records, a title search, or by asking your real estate agent or landlord. For renovations, your contractor records or permit history with the city would have that information.

Once I have that, the real work can begin.

Here’s how I found out this information for our home in Atlanta…

  • Zillow listed the date when our home was built (1930)

  • Toured the home and knew major renovations took place since it looked completely updated

  • Our agent inquired with the listing agent who confirmed the home had been completely renovated in 2017, including an addition and new roof

The First Visit: Data Gathering (1+ hour)

The first visit looks different than most people expect. I'm not there to rearrange furniture or tell you to paint your bedroom blue. I'm there to gather everything I need to map your home accurately.

Here's what that hour looks like:

Layout and documentation
I walk through your home with you, photographing and taking detailed notes about the layout. I document what's in each room like kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, living spaces, and note what furniture is present, what materials it's made from, and what elements are represented in each sector.

Facing direction
I stand outside your home and determine its true facing direction using magnetic north. This is specific, not just "it faces north" but the actual degree it faces. I also observe what's around your home: trees, water features, roads, hills, buildings, or anything that might be blocking or pointing toward your space. All of this informs how energy moves around and through your home.

Measurements
I measure your home's length and width so I can determine the exact center point. As well as looking to see if you have any missing parts (for example, the house isn’t completely square or rectangle and a portion of the home cuts in). Your home's center is the anchor for the nine sectors that make up your feng shui map. Getting this right matters.

Your observations (optional)
As we walk through together, you can tell me which areas feel right and which feel off. Which rooms energize you? Where do you spend the most time, and where do you avoid? I take notes, but this part is optional, it's just additional context.

What's NOT happening in that hour
The analysis. The deep work. The recommendations. That doesn't happen here.

After the Visit: The Real Work (Several Days)

Once I leave your home, the actual analysis begins. This is where I spend days mapping your home's flying stars, overlaying that chart against everything I observed in person, and determining what's in balance and what needs adjustment.

I'm taking the year your home was built (or renovated) and its facing direction and calculating the natal stars for each of your home's nine sectors. Then I'm comparing those natal stars against what I observed during my visit… the materials present, the elements represented, how the space is being used, what you told me feels off.

I'm looking for conflicts. Alignments. Opportunities. I'm determining what elements are missing, what's in excess, and what adjustments would make the biggest difference.

This takes time. It's not quick.

The Report: Your 30-Page Home Assessment

Within five business days, you'll receive your personalized feng shui home assessment report.

This isn't a generic feng shui guide. It's custom to your home.

Here's what it includes:

Your home's flying stars map: A visual representation of the energetic blueprint of your space, calculated using the year it was built (or renovated) and its facing direction.

A detailed breakdown of all nine sectors: Each section of your home gets its own analysis. I cover what's currently present in that sector, what the stars say it should ideally contain, and what elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) are most important there based on your home's unique configuration.

Specific recommendations for each sector: Not just "add more metal" but actual, practical suggestions tailored to your space and how you live.

What controls each sector: The elemental relationships specific to your home's flying stars, so you understand not just what to adjust, but why.

Your home's period and facing direction: A summary of when your home was built and which direction it's oriented, so you understand the foundation everything else is calculated from.

Annual stars: How this year's visiting stars are interacting with each sector of your home, so you know what to pay attention to right now.

A general bagua map: Based on your home's facing direction, showing how the traditional feng shui areas map onto your actual space.

Glossary of terms: So if you encounter a term you're unfamiliar with, you have a reference.

Top three priorities: Based on your home's specific star configuration, here are the three adjustments that will make the biggest difference.

Two Ways to Receive Your Report

The Guided Integration Assessment
You get the in-home visit plus a second session, in person or virtual, where I walk you through your entire report. We go through each sector together. I answer questions. I explain why certain recommendations matter more than others. You leave with a clear understanding of your home and what comes next.

This is ideal if you want to feel guided through the process, or if you want to discuss which recommendations make sense for your life right now.

The Foundational Assessment
You get the initial visit and your report is delivered digitally within five business days. No second session. You review it on your own time.

This is ideal if you want the information and prefer to process it independently, or if you're planning to work with me further on spatial alignment sessions later.

Either way, if you decide to continue working together on spatial alignment sessions, you'll receive a $150 credit toward your first session.

Virtual Assessments: A Different Format, Same Rigor

Can't do in-person because you don’t live in Atlanta? Virtual assessments work too.

How it works

Instead of me coming to your home, we schedule a video call. During that call, you walk me through your home on camera, both inside and outside. I'm taking the same notes, observing the same details, asking the same questions, just remotely.

You'll guide me through each room, and then you'll take your device outside so I can see what's around your home… trees, water features, roads, neighboring buildings, hills. I observe the external environment the same way I would in person.

The difference: you'll need to provide two pieces of information that I'd normally measure or determine in person.

Facing direction: During our video call, I'll guide you through finding your home's true facing direction using your phone's compass app. I'll help you get it right so we have accuracy.

Floor dimensions: You'll provide your home's length and width in feet. I use these measurements to calculate your floor plan and determine your home's center point, just as I would in person.

Everything else is the same. The same detailed analysis. The same 30-page report. The same recommendations based on your home's unique flying stars.

After the Report: What Comes Next

The report gives you the map. It shows you what your home's energy is asking for.

What you do with that information is entirely up to you. Some people implement recommendations right away. Some take time to think about what makes sense for their life. Some want to work with me on spatial alignment sessions to navigate the adjustments together.

There's no pressure. No timeline. The report is yours to use however serves you best.

Why This Process Matters

That initial session is just the beginning.

The real work… the analysis, the mapping, the recommendations happens after I leave. It takes time because your home deserves precision, not guessing.

You deserve to understand the actual energy of your space, not a surface-level interpretation. You deserve recommendations that are grounded in your home's real configuration, not generic advice.

That's what the assessment provides.

So if you're ready to understand your home at that level, let's start with one simple question: what year was your home built (or last significantly renovated)?

Everything else follows from there.

Athena

I came to feng shui through healing, which is probably why I've never been able to treat it as a lifestyle aesthetic. After being diagnosed with an auto-immune disease in 2012 I started working with a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner who introduced it as part of my treatment. That experience made it very clear early on that this was something far more critical than making sure my house was tidy.

Eventually my journey led me to Flying Stars, the classical system known as Xuan Kong Fei Xing, and I haven't looked back.

I also spent over two decades in PR and brand strategy in the real estate industry, helping Fortune 500 companies understand how the way they show up shapes how the world receives them. I've spent more than 20 years telling the story of the value of a home. Now I get to tell a different and deeper part of that story.

Every assessment is grounded in your home's natal chart, its facing direction, and what the stars are actually doing in your space right now.
