What's Happening Outside Your Home: How External Energy Impacts Your Space
When I walk into a client's home for the first time, I spend time inside. But I also spend time outside.
I look at what's surrounding the house. Where the roads are flowing. What's pointing toward the front door. What trees are blocking the view. How the lot sits in relation to everything around it. What's happening outside your home is influencing what's happening inside.
Roads Are Like Rivers
Think of every road surrounding your home as a river.
Roads have flow. They have direction. They move energy, good energy and challenging energy, constantly.
If your home sits at the end of a cul-de-sac, all that energy is flowing directly into your space with nowhere else to go. If your home is positioned at the T-section of a road, energy is being directed straight at your house. That's a lot of force concentrated in one place.
Ideally, you never buy a home in either of these positions. But if you already live in one, feng shui has solutions.
When Energy Flows Directly at Your Home: Blocking and Diffusing
The Cul-de-Sac & T-Section Situation
You live at the end of a cul-de-sac, all the road energy terminates at your property. It doesn't dissipate. It concentrates. You live at the junction of a T-section, you're the target. A road points directly at your home like an arrow.
The Remedy: Block or Diffuse
In both cases, you're working with the same principle: you want to interrupt that flow before it reaches your home.
Blocking stops the energy:
A fence along your property line
A wall
Diffusing scatters the energy rather than stopping it cold:
A water feature (a fountain or a small pond)
Trees or hedges
Outside lighting pointing towards the road
The choice depends on your space and what feels right for you. But the goal is the same: break up that concentrated river of energy before it hits your front door.
When Buildings Point at Your Home
Sometimes it's not a road. It's the roof line of a neighboring building or house.
If a sharp roof angle points directly at your home, that's negative energy being directed at you. Same principle as the road situation, just a different source.
The Remedy: Block or Diffuse
Use the same formula:
Blocking: fencing or a wall positioned to block the pointing angle
Diffusing: trees, bushes, lights or a water feature positioned between the pointing angle and your home
The goal: block, hide or scatter the sharp angle energy pointing toward you.
When Your Neighbor Feels Like a Problem
Sometimes it's not the architecture. It's the neighbor. Maybe their home faces yours directly. Maybe you feel the tension. Maybe there's conflict.
Feng shui addresses this too.
The Remedy: Mirror Solution
Place a small mirror in your window facing outward toward their home. The mirror's job is to return that energy back to its source. Whatever is being directed at you, the mirror sends back.
Visibility Matters
Here's the key principle across all of these situations: if you can see it, the negative energy is reaching your home.
If a sharp building angle is hidden behind mature trees, you can't see it. The negative energy is being blocked or diffused. Problem solved.
If a stop sign is visible from inside your home… A problem I had to deal with because our home is on a corner lot, then that sharp metal rectangle with the command to stop is visibly directing halting energy straight at our space. That's when you intervene.
Our Corner Lot House: A Real-World Example
We live on a corner lot. That means we have active road energy not just in front of our home, but along the entire side as well. It's like living at the intersection of two rivers.
Our front has two stop signs visible from inside our family room. My remedy:
Blocking: I use window shades in our family room so the stop signs aren't visible from inside. If we can't see them, the energy is blocked from entering our home.
Diffusing: I have a quartz crystal hanging in each of the three windows where the stop signs are visible. An additional layer of diffusing that energy before it enters.
Perimeter protection: Along our entire property line we have trees, a fence, and shrubbery. Same blocking and diffusing formula applied to both sides because the road energy comes from two directions.
It's not complicated. It's intentional.
The Principle Applies Everywhere
These are just a few examples of what you might encounter outside your home. The principle remains the same:
If negative or sharp energy is being directed at your home, whether it's a concentrated road flow, a pointing roof line, a neighbor's gaze, or a stop sign, you have options.
Block it so it doesn't reach you.
Diffuse it so it scatters instead of concentrating.
Return it with a mirror so it goes back to its source.
The key: be observant. Look at what's surrounding your home. Notice what's visible from your windows. Ask yourself: is this energy supporting my home, or is it working against it?
Then adjust accordingly.
That's how external feng shui works. Not mystical. Not complicated. Just paying attention to what's outside so you can protect what's inside.
